Finding Calm in the Chaos: 3 Ways to Reset When Life Feels Overwhelming

December 18, 20245 min read

We’ve all had those mornings—the kind where everything feels like it’s happening all at once. The dogs are barking, the kids are melting down, and your to-do list is already longer than your patience. It’s the kind of chaos that makes your skin tingle, your heart race, and your mind go blank.

I know this feeling all too well.

When My Morning Fell Apart

Let me share a personal story. One morning, everything went sideways. My dogs were barking, the cats were crying to be fed, and my daughter was in full tantrum mode. Chaos had taken over, and I felt completely overwhelmed.

I couldn’t think clearly—my heart was pounding, and every sound felt muffled. All I wanted was a moment of quiet to catch my breath and figure out how my morning had spiraled so far out of control.

In that moment, I had to make a choice: let the chaos consume me or find a way to reset. I chose the latter. I paused, took some deep breaths, and grounded myself in the moment. Slowly, I felt the tension ease. From there, I could approach the situation with clarity and calm.

This wasn’t a magic fix, and it didn’t make the chaos disappear. But it gave me the space to handle it with intention rather than reacting out of stress.

1. Pause and Breathe

I know how hard it is to stop what you’re doing and focus on deep breathing when everything feels like it’s spinning out of control. Your brain tells you there’s no time, no space to pause—but here’s the truth: unless there’s immediate danger, it’s going to be okay.

Taking a moment to breathe doesn’t magically make the chaos disappear, but it does prepare you to face it with clarity and calm. When you pause and breathe deeply, you’re signaling to your body and mind that it’s safe to slow down.

Here’s how to do it: take a deep inhale through your nose for 4 counts, hold it for 4, and exhale through your mouth for 6. Repeat this simple rhythm until you feel a small shift—a little more grounded, a little more clear.

This isn’t about fixing everything at once. It’s about resetting your mind so you can approach the situation step by step, rather than reacting out of overwhelm. A few focused breaths can be the difference between chaos controlling you and you taking back control.

2. Find One Small Focus Point

When the world feels like it’s spinning around you, grounding yourself in the present moment is key. Focusing on the sensation of something physical—a warm mug in your hands, the texture of your clothing, or the solid ground beneath your feet—can anchor you in reality.

Why does this work? Because it pulls your attention away from the spiral of overwhelming thoughts and emotions. Instead of getting lost in the “what ifs” and the noise, you’re redirecting your mind to something steady and tangible.

Feel the warmth of the mug in your hands. Notice the smoothness of the ceramic or the softness of your favorite sweater. Press your feet firmly into the ground and remind yourself: I am supported.

This isn’t just a distraction—it’s a way to give your mind a safe place to land amidst the chaos. By focusing on the present moment, you remind yourself that you don’t have to solve everything at once. You just need to be here right now.

3. Acknowledge the Chaos and Let It Go

You don’t have to fix everything at once. In fact, trying to tackle everything at the same time is what often leads to overwhelm. Instead, start with one thing.

If your child is upset, focus on calming them first. If the pets are making a mess, address that one step at a time. Trust that you’ll get through the rest, but give yourself permission to let go of the pressure to solve it all immediately.

Sometimes, acknowledging the chaos is enough to begin easing its hold on you. Say to yourself: Yes, this is hard. But I can handle it. One small action at a time will lead you through.
